Courage

I believe courage is the highest human quality and you must confront and conquer fear to achieve it. You are not normally born with courage but you can develop it. For me, my avenue was adventure travel, hitting the road alone to risk, receiving an adrenaline rush as my reward. Once you learn to face your fears, you conquer and become a stronger person. Our successes build successes.

At times I have been pretty afraid. I decided to tackle this flaw beginning in my early 50’s. My love of travel presented a way to acknowledge my fears and overcome. I traveled by myself as I embarked on two month international trips to remote destinations during the next fifteen years.

These adventures—traveling with a backpack, using public transportation or on foot and staying mostly in hostels, allowed me to assimilate with the locals. It was such a rewarding experience I couldn’t stop until one day I said to myself, Sally; you’ve found your courage! I had succeeded so fully I knew I no longer needed to continue this obsession.

It influenced my life to such an extent; I was compelled to write my first book, “Courage Quest” which I lavished with fifty photos of my travel encounters. It records a time of tremendous growth for me when I found the key to conquer obstacles, threats and a desire to share my discoveries with others.

Some people are hesitant to even go to a restaurant or to take a short trip out of their city by themselves. In this book I suggest ways to start building your courage. I give descriptions of my trips which challenged and moved me forward.

Why do you want to acquire courage? By pushing beyond obstacles and fear, you focus on the edge creating new ways to achieve all and be what your mind imagines. This confrontation with the unknown and dangers integrates your body, mind and spirit as you live in the “now.” Succeeding, stress is relieved and you take life straight on. I like to say you have become brave.

You confront, deal with adversity, risk, but most importantly, you act. It is your growth to additional confident and self-esteem, becoming an independent person that gifts you a new zest, compassion and empathy in life.
